Only a few hours of the Nitecap program was saved by Herb and his family. I only saved one hour of the show from my days at WXVW.

Please help us preserve the legacy of Herb Jepko and the Nitecap Radio Network by sending any "Lost Tapes of the Nitecap Show" to our address below. Origianls will be carefully digitally copied and then returned to you. Tape copies, or emailed or burned mp3s are also welcome.

From the very beginning, Herb insisted that this was the listener's show, not his. Even the name "Nitecaps" was chosen following an on-air vote (Herb originally called the show "The Other Side of the Day").

In 1965 the Nitecaps organized a contest to select an official song. Entries were received from all over the United States. The top three were chosen for professional recording and release as a 45-rpm sized recording (although it plays at 33 1/3rd).

All three were performed by recording artist Don Ray (does anyone know more about him?). Don also wrote two of the ones that were recorded ("The Ballad of Herb" and "the Nitecap Lullaby"). But it was a listener named Della Dame who wrote the immortal words: "We're the Nitecaps, nitey Nitecaps" (does anyone know more about Della?). The back cover copy of the record states: "Della Dame's "THE NITECAP SONG was selected by unanimous vote as the official Nitecap song."

Published by "Gold Leaf RecordsJ-104, Newhouse Hotel, Salt Lake City, Utah."

Click on the record covers below to play them. (Requires an mp3 compatiable player.) If you donate (whatever you can afford) to the Herb Jepko Scholarship Fund, I will be pleased to send you a CD or cassette with another 50 minutes of Nitecap Show highlights.

The audio portion of a 10 minute television documentary produced in early 1979. Anyone know which station? The show was called "EXTRA."

"We're the Nitecaps, nighty Nitecaps, and we hail from everywhere, but we meet and greet and reminisce when we broadcast over the air. . . . We love to hear each other chat, to hear each glad "Hello!" But most of all we love to hear the voice of our own Herb Jepko. . . . On the quiet side . . . on the starry side . . . on the side where the moombeams play . . . on the brand new side of the day. "
The Official Song

"Nitecaps are people who love to hear people discussing their problems and views. Hearing each other, they often discover horizons that they never knew. Nitecaps are people to love tell people the secret that hides in their hearts. Some are undaunted, and some are unwanted, but each has a tale to impart. Turning the nighttime into a delight time for all who can possibly hear. . . . Being a part of and deep in the heart of so many who take time to care."

The Nitecap Lullaby

Who's the man who listens to everybody's noise? He's never lost his temper, he's never lost his poise. Who's the man who has to hear every bellyache? Call him Mr. Jepko, the Herb of hours late. . . . Who's the man who always says: "Gee you lookin' great?" . . . Herb Jepko always tries to be a friend and a neighbor to the likes of you and me. Call him Mr. Jepko, the Herb of hours late."
